Why I had to quit the fitness industry

They say you sometimes have to hit rock bottom before your eyes can open…and that was certainly true for me…

As I lay on my bathroom floor, staring at my own bloody vomit, years of deception and lies faded away…

And I realized that I had nearly killed myself with fitness.

Years before, I had been a normal, healthy and relatively happy teenager…

But things happened to me that made me feel bad about myself...

And like so many other young girls, I mistakenly believed that having healthy curves was something else to be ashamed of…

I was desperate to feel better about myself, so I began a decades-long pursuit of the “perfect body”...

I started taking every fitness class I could…

I really couldn’t afford my membership, so I was thrilled when I was asked to become a fitness instructor...and I got paid to workout 20 hours a week!

I became fanatical about burning fat and getting thin...both for myself and my clients…

I got NBA and NFL players back in shape after the off-season by melting away every ounce of fat they had, which made me the go-to girl for bodybuilding competitors looking to get rid of the tiniest bits of body fat.

Here’s the real irony: even as my bodybuilding clients strutted the competition stage in the smallest possible bikinis, I was terrified to even wear a bathing suit at the beach…

Because even though I taught 20 fitness classes a week…

And even though I came in early to the gym to workout BEFORE my classes…

And even though I was severely bulimic and throwing up most of my food…

I was still 25 pounds overweight.

No matter what I did, no matter how much I starved myself…

I couldn’t force my body to be healthy.

And as I sat in my bathroom, beaten down by my eating disorder and years of over-exercise…

I was forced to ask some tough questions…

Is this as good as it gets?

Is this how life was meant to be lived?

And in that moment, I decided to abandon my quest for the “perfect body”...

That was the moment that everything changed…

Fast forward a few months…

I had moved from LA to the Caribbean…

I hadn’t set foot inside a gym...

In fact, I hadn’t done any of the exercising that I was supposedly an “expert” at…

I stopped counting calories and starving myself...

Yet my body was completely different...

Those 20-25 extra pounds that had tortured me for years had vanished without effort…

My eating disorder was gone too. I was actually enjoying eating again!

And most importantly, I was happy, calm, and at peace. I felt like a completely different person.

The transformation I experienced defied everything I had been taught as a “fitness expert”...

I was eating whatever I wanted, and avoiding the gym, yet I was getting healthier every day…

Without realizing it, I had stumbled onto a different way of getting healthy...one that worked for me like nothing ever had…

I’ve spent the next decade teaching what I learned to other women all over the world.

A big part of what helped me transform was dancing. I found that I could create dance sessions that gave my body a better workout than a fitness class. By structuring the dance moves to be adaptable for any fitness or energy level, I never hurt myself or flooded my body with stress hormones like normal exercise would…
