The Real Problem with the Peloton ad

Posted on December 18 2019

Unless you’ve been living on a remote island for the past month, you’ve no doubt seen the controversy surrounding the Peloton ad that features a woman’s one year journey using the Peloton exercise bike.

The backlash to this ad has been insane.

The criticism to this ad includes things like…

  • How dare a man buy a woman a piece of exercise equipment. That is totally sexist and demeaning.
  • The woman in the ad is already in great shape, she doesn’t need to lose weight.
  • After a year of working out - the women looks exactly the same.

Here’s just a few tweets concerning the ad…

Pretty harsh, huh? And these were the more tame comments.

While I think these negative reactions were unwarranted, I think they miss the biggest problem with the ad...

To me, the message that the only way to get healthy is by doing an insanely intense workout on a piece of exercise equipment is a BIG FAT LIE.

You can move your body in a fun, gentle and creative way and still get a great workout.

In fact, it wasn’t until I stopped doing all of the hard core, "no-pain, no-gain" type of exercises that I actually got healthy and lost weight that I’d been carrying around for years.

That’s why I created Body Groove.

To give you an alternative way to workout and move your body and still get the results you’re looking for.

But don’t take my work for it.

    Try it for yourself.

Try a 21 minute workout on Body Groove On-Demand

As you’ll notice, it’s nothing like riding a stationary bike or running on a treadmill until you're completely exhausted...

    It’s not boring...

    It’s not mundane...

    It’s not follow the leader!

However, it is FUN and It is EFFECTIVE.

So if you haven’t tried it yet, do it today.

    Much love,

P.S. I'd love to know if you agree with my conclusion. Let me know by commenting below.

Just started using body groove and I love that it is so real! The people are real, meaning not everyone looks alike! Also you show modifications to help anyone. I wish I could go to a class with other people because I think my dogs wonder what I am doing dancing around the house. It took me a while to actually sign up but I have enjoyed what I have done so far. The only problem is me finding the personal motivation to continue!! But the actual workouts are great!!!!

I LOVE doing Body Groove. I get up at 5am and go downstairs to do my Body Groove thing; however I still go to the gym and do the elliptical machine (it’s easy on my knees also) and then some light weights, then off to the hydro-massage bed for some relaxation before going home and starting dinner. Repeat, rinse, repeat!! This works for me and I LOVE the freedom that Body Groove gives me. They can take their Peloton, I’ve got Body Groove!! :-) Teresa

ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY!! While the ad was disturbing, I found it to be so for the reasons you stated, not for the others. Maybe she asked for that Peloton, maybe it wasn’t about the weight loss for her, maybe a lot of things. BUT, that isn’t the only way to be changed, or to lose weight. Body Groove has changed my life over these last 11 months. I feel more comfortable in my own skin. I’ve lost 30 pounds. I look forward to my “work-out time”, which has NEVER been the case before.

You are spot on Misty! Not only is that crazy to bust your butt for a whole year to get rid of that 4 lbs, but the cost of the equipment and online costs too!
My wife just had surgery and was laid up for 8 weeks. I had all the chores myself which I was glad to do, and I lost 11 lbs in the process, my wife loves me more and didn’t need a Peloton!!!
      Keep up the great work!

Agreed Misty! As a fitness professional, a lover of movement and a psychotherapist, I gave up the mundane, injury prone ways of moving years ago and became a teacher of the Nia technique. I love moving my body In a way that feels like ME. Movement that feeds my body, invites my emotions and taps into fun is the way. I’ve only recently discovered Body Groove, just ordered a bunch of your DVDs, and cannot wait to dive in and dance with you!

The Peleton ad was quite silly on so many levels.

I love your workouts. They are not only great, gentle exercise, but they are energizing and free-ing. I always feel better about my own body after following you around the dance floor. : ) All of this program is effective, better fitness, etc., and what I think I love most is that I feel like I am beginning to really appreciate and care about (not just care for) my own body. : ) Thank you!

I so agree with you. I have tried the exercise bikes and other equipment and now I enjoy Body Groove right in my own living room and there is nothing to put away after I am done except my energy and enthusiasm that I have. I have sever arthritis and have lived with it for over 15 years, actually had kind of gotten in a rut and was really starting to just set up per say as I didn’t want to move as I hurt and ached so much, now that i have been moving for over 2 1/2 months, I feel amazing. Body Groove is gentle on my joints and I still walk away from it daily and feel amazing! Thank you Misty for such an amazing program.
